Chest Physiotherapy? Hi, Im 16 and i have Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 and get a lot of chest infections that lead to pneumonia. I go to the childrens hospital but because im 16 im being transferred to Wythenshawe hospital. When ever i go in hospital one of the physio's always come and check my chest and give me chest physio if i need it because of my weakness i cant cough it up, so they have to pat me and shake and then suck it out of me mouth with the suction. Im a bit worried about when i go to the other hospital that they wont have physio's there that can do this. If any body has any advice or if you know about the hospital please let me know! Thanks!
chest physiotherapy for a ILD/OSA patient? i want to know what modification we can do in Active chest physio for a ILD (interstitial lung disease) patient and an OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)patient to increase its effectiveness
Chest problems? I have a condition called spinal muscular atrophy which means i am very prone to chest infections and when i get one i have to be in hospital because i need i.v antibiotics and chest physiotherapy. About 3 weeks ago i was admitted to hospital with what they thought was either a chest infection or a viral infection, it started with a sore throat and then the next morning i felt awful, my head was banging and i just wanted to sleep, later on in the day i started vomiting up brown blood and was feeling really weak so my mum took me to hospital. When i got there the doctor in the emergency room seemed concerned because my heart rate was in the 140's to 150's and they said i was tachycardic yet my blood pressure was quite low. So he took some blood and gave me a chest x-ray and started me on i.v antibiotics and fluids. I was kept in hospital for a week and was then allowed to go home, the doctor let me have some extra antibiotics to take home because i was going on holiday the week after.. so they were just incase i needed them while i was away. The week after i came out of hospital i had a bit of a cough in the night (when i lay on my side i would feel fluid in my lung and then when i turned over it would move and i could either cough it up or it would make crackling noises for a while). I told my physiotherapy about this because she comes to give me exercises each week and will also do my chest if i need it, so that week she gave me some chest physio and it seemed to loosen up quite a bit and then clear up. So i thought i was going to be ok for my holiday, but the day i arrived my chest started again and when i coughed it would rattle around really loud until i could get rid of it and again it was worse at night when i was lay down and it felt like it was really deep down in my lungs, is this bad? My mum got worried so she started me on my antibiotics but my chest stayed the same for a whole week and sometimes i would need my mum to shake me when i coughed to help me to clear it but then all of a sudden it went and i am worried that the fluid may just be lying there on my lungs because i never actually got rid of it, my cough feels like it has gone but every so often i will get a tickle in my throat that will start a coughing fit and lasts for ages, do you think it will be ok? i have been taking honey and lemon to sooth my throat and chest, is there any other natural things ii could use for my throat? i just get really worried when i have problems with my chest because i have had pneumonia that many times. And no, to the person who said about me wanting sympathy, i didnt have enough words left to fit the whole question in one box because you only get 1000 characters. thanks
Chest Physio or Respiritory Therapists? Hi, the problem is i am 16 and being transferred to Wythenshawe hospital because i will soon be to old for the Childrens hospital. I have SMA which means i have weak muscles and i easily get chest infections and sometimes end up with pneumonia, when i get a chest infection i have to go in hospital and have I.V antibiotics and physiotherapy on my chest because i am not strong enough to cough it up myself. I was wondering will they still have physio's at this hospital which can do chest physio or respiratory therapists because i dont know what i would do if they dont have them. Or do most hospitals have this, if you know please answer as i am worried, thank you!
physiotherapy after paralysis? I have a friend who recently broke his C4, 5, 6 in a car crash, causing his spinal cord to be part torn, and resulting in paralysis from the chest down. Although the prognosis is clearly not great, I have been informed that he is to undergo physiotherapy over the next year - my question is what does this physiotherapy plan to achieve? Surely if the spinal cord is part severed, and he is numb from the chest down then there is no chance of regaining mobility etc, and i am a little confused as to what specifically this physiotherapy may involve. Thanks Mike
Health Care Reform and Preexisting Chronic Illnesses? Would this bill (just recently passed) have any impact on people with Preexisting chronic illnesses? Examples are nebulizer medications, certain IV therapies, or chest physiotherapy. Please give references! Thanks!!! The existing condition is Crohn's Disease. And yes it is already covered with my existing health insurance
In constant shoulder, chest pain - how to cope? For a long time now I have constant shoulder and chest pain, on my left side. I've had ECGs, some x-rays, a couple of years ago I had an MRI, I go to physiotherapy, but nothing helps. The pain is piercing around the lower edge of my ribs and under my arm, form time to time, as if someone was pinching me, but there is also a dull ache across the shoulder and I'm totally stiff in the muscles behind my left shoulder blade. Physiotherapy doesn't help, despite the exercises. I'm so worn out every day, I just don't know how to cope anymore. I get tired and work is so difficult because I have to sit down which further increases the stiffness in my back. Any ideas? I'm in my 40s and am overweight, although I'm generally healthy. The ECG was done a couple of months ago, when I had chest pains. And I had one done a year before that. Both were clear. They did CT scans of my spine earlier this year, and a year ago. The pain was present before, during and after those tests.
My room looks like a hospital!? Okay, this is going to sound weird. I have cystic fibrosis. In my room I have my vest (for chest physiotherapy) and nebulizer machine, the pole for my feeding tube, the IV pole for now (cuz im on iv antibiotics...again) and the newest development, my oxygen. I hate hate hate hate it!! does anyone have any kind of suggestions to make my room feel less hospital-y? lol
pseudomonas and bronchiectasis? My mother has both and uses antibiotics and has physiotherapy to clear her chest. Does anyone know of anything else which could improve her life expectancy? Any natural remedies or anything that may help her as her chest is now really bad. Thanks.
How do you get kids to take their meds? My daughter (age 8) has cystic fibrosis and has always had lots of meds. Right now she has 1 1/2 hours of chest physiotherapy a day, 7 nebulizer treatments a day, 3 different antibiotics, different types of vitamins, supplements, acid reflux meds, inhalers...But anyway, she is starting to rebel against taking them and some days she just breaks down crying and it makes me feel horrible. I'm sure its normal, but if anyone else has kids who need to take lots of meds, how do you motivate them?
Pinched Nerve or Spontaneous Pneumothorax? I had a spontaneous pneumothorax about 6 weeks ago. this was confirmed with a ct scan using injected dye. it felt like i had another 2 weeks later so was sent off for chest x-rays. these came back clear - no shadows/infections etc. it felt like i had another today so off i went to the doctors. he poked and proded and asked the various questions. i was diagnosed by physiotherapy few years back that i am slighly hyper-mobile in my joints after an injury to one of my finger joints at work. the doctor said my shoulder blade move quite a bit and the said it was a pinched nerve causing the pain in the chest making it feel like a lung collapse. The last 2 i was doing housework, using my left arm which is the side i feel the pain on everytime. but the first which was definitely an SP i was asleep and it was around 2 in the morning i woke with pain. anyone else think this is the likely reason or has someone else experienced these symptoms and found out it was something serious? To Demi, maybe try reading slower and make the text bigger or if you dont understand the comment and question maybe you shouldnt be commenting at all :)
pain in neck, shoulder, arm, wrist, fingers, jaw I have had terrible pains in the top left side of my body for about 2 years. I first noticed it when my arm and shoulder felt stuff and i experienced a lot of discomfort when sitting for long periods. Recently it has worsened and i am now experiencing a pain or ache in my neck and shoulder (around the blade), my arm has shooting pains all the way to wrist and fingers(which often tingle) and i get numbness in my jaw.i sometimes feel chest tightness too. Some days it is unbearable and even very strong painkillers do not reduce the level of pain. I have had numerous blood tests for arthritus, bone problems and all he usual and am just awaiting results of an x-ray on my shoulder. I believe it is a trapped nerve which could explain the chest tightness. i cannot even lift up my arm without it shaking or move it into any position other than forward. My Dr has suggested physiotherapy (which has a long waiting list) and i am meeting with her to get the results of my x ray next week, although i do not think it is bone related. I get the pains contstantly most days. Anyone else had any of these symptoms?

Do you think Thilan Samaraweera's cricket Test career is finish for the future? Thilan Samaraweera may have been discharged from the hospital & he can say all he wants but, i personally think his test or any cricket career for SL is finish (srry to say) hver, once u get an bullet into ur knee cap. There is no way u can recover 100% by operating ur foot componets effectivly or using ur legs 100%. As a lakan desi or a Lakan supporter of SL Cricket i feel sad & angry for his case bc, he wont be the same & smack double centuries....so that my frd is the whoel trh & nutin but the trhth. Amin. Thilan Samaraweera feared for his cricket career after the Lahore attack but is now confident of making a comeback to international cricket. Cricket, he says, remains his first priority and he is even open to playing in Pakistan again. Samaraweera, who had a bullet removed from his left leg, was discharged from a Colombo hospital on Tuesday - two weeks after the attack - and went to the Sri Lankan board office today for physiotherapy. Two of his injuries have healed but his leg is still heavily plastered as he is yet to recover from the most serious injury, that to his hamstring. He has not held a bat yet but is hopeful of resuming practice in April. Has the attack changed his outlook on the game? "No, I don't think so," Samaraweera told Cricinfo in an extensive interview. "Cricket is my No. 1 priority and I have to get physically and mentally strong to represent my country again. I was out of the team for two years but I came back strongly and I will do so again after this incident. "I have had two weeks to think about it. Today I decided not to think about the past and to try and be positive." The recent past has been extremely difficult for Samaraweera. The four days immediately proceding the Lahore attack were particularly torturous. "They were terrible. I couldn't go to the toilet, I couldn't walk, I couldn't even sleep as I couldn't change my body position. Those four days really worried me a lot. But, after the second operation it got better and, at the moment, my leg movements are improving every day." Apart from conventional treatment, Samaraweera also met up with the Sri Lankan President's personal physician, Dr Eliyantha White, a faith healer who has successfully treated Lasith Malinga and Sanath Jayasuriya in the recent past. "I had a couple of sessions with him; he blessed me and gave me herbs. Everything is working well for me now." Looking back at the incident, what strikes Samaraweera the most is how he and his team-mates didn't panic and how survival instincts took over. "That was the best thing. I was lying on the floor, in front of Sangakkara, when I got hit. I immediately put my head under the seat to protect it from getting hit. My leg was bleeding but survival instincts didn't allow me to panic. Once the bus stopped, I told [Chamara] Kapugedera, 'I can't walk; please take me to the dressing-room.'" He was shifted immediately to hospital, where thoughts regarding his cricketing future terrified him. " I thought my career was over but a professor, who saw my X-rays and scans, came in and said, 'You are a lucky man. Don't worry, you will play again.' The bullet had gone through the muscle and not hit the bone or the knee." Yet he was unaware of the gravity of the attacks until he reached the army base near Lahore, from where he was airlifted to Colombo. "There I saw [the footage] on news channels and it was terrible." Samaraweera did not speak to his wife until six hours after the attack. "I didn't want to as I knew she would panic. I spoke to her brother and told him the injuries were not serious. When I finally did speak to my wife, she didn't believe that I was alright - the channels were saying I'd been hit in the head and chest. Only after she saw me at Colombo airport was she happy and relieved. Looking back at the incident, what strikes Samaraweera the most is how he and his team-mates didn't panic and how survival instincts took over "She is yet to fully recover from the shock, though. She is going to counselling sessions, arranged by the board, and is improving [Samaraweera himself will attend those sessions when fully fit]. The sessions have helped her a lot; they've also helped me in my rehabilitation back home. She is now moving on, dropping my kid to school and running the house." Samaraweera has been spending time with his two daughters, aged eight and three. "The younger one doesn't know anything," he said with a laugh. "The elder one was worried about my leg and kept asking her mother whether I would be okay, whether I would be able to drop her at school soon! I am really happy with the emotional support that I have got from my family. My wife has never said not to play cricket in the future; she is just worried about my health." He also cited his faith in Buddhism as another healing factor. "It clears your mind and calms you. None of us was seriously injured. Call it luck or whatever you will … My faith in r
Collar bone Posterior SC joint dislocation: 3 years later, still having pain.. help, and suggestions? (first i apologize its quite long) oki so 3 years ago i was ice skating, i fell backwards and landed on the palm of my left hand, the force shot up and dislocated my Collar bone at the Sternoclavicular joint (where the collar bone meets the breast bone) It dislocated in a Posterior manner (meaning that my collar bone now sticks out frontwards and can be seen if someone looks at my chest) i went to the walk in centre and the nurse told me it was a pulled muscle.. a week later i was in agony so i went to the AandE and they confirmed it had been dislocated but they couldn'tt pop it back as it will have started setting where it was, therefore i was given a sling and then physiotherapy. since then i have been having trouble with it, it aches a lot of the time, sometimes feels like its being pulled outwards or pushed inwards, it can get really uncomfortable at night trying to sleep on it. i have since been back to the doctors and have been given ibuprofens, pain relief but nothing seems to be working. I am also getting a little worried as it dislocated at the SC joint but i am getting pain at the AC joint (where the collar bone meets the end of the shoulder) this feels again like its not fitted correctly and its aching too. i haven't had any recent injuries that may have messed it up so i was wondering should i be worried? should i go back and see another doctor, after all its 3 years next month since i broke it :S help and advice is really appreciated thanks xx
Can my 6 year have allergy asthma when symptoms only prevail at night? My 6 year daughter was diagnosed with Bronchitis 3 weeks ago. After the first week of antibiotics she was not getting better and was waking up in the middle of the night coughing, which would then lead to vomiting. I took her back to the GP who put her on a stronger antibiotic and referred her for physiotherapy and nebulising twice daily. At the end of the second week, after two course of antibiotics and antihestimines, my daughter suffered what I was sure was an asthma attack. She woke up coughing, starting vomiting and couldn't breathe, she went purple in the face. When rushing her to hospital, chest Xrays were clear and I was referred to a paediacitrician who advised my daughter has mould allergy. Asthma tests were conducted during the day and she was clear. However in the evening my daughter still wakes up coughing and can't breathe. Is it possible that she could have allergy asthma whereby the symptoms would not be detected during the day? Desperate to help my little girl!

Fed up with the feelings!? Ok...I'm sorry it's a long question but I feel if I explain my past experiences, it may help withthe answer! Ive suffered from panic attacks since the age of four...they started then stopped for four years before starting again! Ive always disliked being alone (probably from my parents arguing and my mother threatening to leave! Packing her bags and everything) Also I have had spells of agoraphobia which would affect my school as I would often fake things! Now it's worse than ever! My Dad passed in oct 07 and it kind of set off a depressive spell, my agoraphobia and anxiety kicked in and stayed in...a couple of months of struggling went by and I had a spell in a shop where my vision jumped & I freaked thinking I was guna pass out! Finally in June I couldn't even walk for the off balance feeling! It affected my legs so bad...they would just go! I even tried physiotherapy but no avail. Now I'm on anti-depressants and my partner cant work as he has to do the school runs as I cannot even go out the door without panicking most days!!! In August last year I tried to go to a wedding with my bf and we made it to the train station but my eyes wouldnt focus properly (everything seemed so far away) I tried distraction with my young son but nothing helped...I even felt like I was guna mess myself but when I went to the loo, nothing happened...eventually I felt so dizzy I fell there and then! I was aware what was happening but I couldnt do anything...I dont know if it was a faint or what! But it happened twice and scared the hell outta me...now I'm too scared to even be alone in case I fall again like that and my kids see it and get scared. Nowadays I am even too scared to be alone in case it happens again. For the record, I eat regularly, I'm 8 stone (slightly underweight for my 5ft 7 frame) and my BP is a regular 100/50 on a slow day. Also I am on CBT Does anyone else have these nightmarish feelings? The tingles up the arms and down the legs? The pains in the chest? The vision going blurry and /or almost grainy? If so please can somebody help! I just wana be normal and a good mum again!
