To anyone involved w/ occupational therapy: What is the nature of occupational therapy? I'd like to hear about the specific duties of occupational therapists, what the job market is really like, and if occupational therapists find the career rewarding. Also, what kind of traits make a person a good occupational therapist? (I am thinking of enrolling in an occupational therapy program after I graduate, and I would like to find out the information I can't obtain from the Occupational Outlook Handbook.) Thank you!
Any Occupational or physical therapy aides out there? How did you get your jobs? How old do you have to be and what is a typical day like? What do you do and do you like your jobs? Being an aide, do it make you want to go all the way and become either a physical therapist or occupational therapist? I need some advice because I am thinking about getting a job as an occupational therapy aide or physical therapy aide.
What is the difference between occupational therapy and rehabilitation counseling? I work in the field of developmental disabilities, and I love my job, but it just doesn't pay enough to support my family. I am looking into getting my Masters to be an occupational therapist or rehabilitation counselor, but I want to really understand what these jobs entail in the day-to-day. I have a better grasp on occupational therapy than rehab counseling. Can anyone help me?
What is the field of occupational therapy like? I am considering working as an occupational therapy and I would like to know some more information about the field. I have read the occupational outlook handbook, but I feel like the description of it is really broad. I would love to hear any personal stories if anyone would like to share. For therapists, what kind of work do you do with your patients? For patients, what was your therapy like? What activities did you do for what?
How much science is involved in Occupational Therapy? I understand that Occupational Therapy is in the medical field and therefore basic knowledge of how things work is important. However, do you have to be a real science buff to study OT? I am much more creative and into English, reading, writing, etc. I have always had a hard time with math and science. Besides basic physics & biology, is it necessary to be extremely good at science to become an OT? Thanks!
What makes people choose speech pathology over occupational therapy and vice versa? I have been looking to go into speech pathology for some time but unsure if it's the right choice for me. Occupational therapy also seems to be a good career and has recently been on the top careers list in the past few years. What are the main differences between the speech pathology career and the OT career? Why/How do people choose one over the other? What kind of personality do you need to have to be in one over the other? Any input would be appreciated.
Would you find Occupational Therapy an enjoyable and stimulating career? I am almost done my Bachelor's degree in Human Development (I'll be graduating in December from Penn State). I have looked at a couple of options for what to pursue for my masters degree. I know I will work in either education or healthcare as I find them spectacular areas with good job security and consider these fields rewarding. Do you think occupational therapy would be a good choice for a career? Thanks much, my other idea is school counselor probably at the elementary level.
How difficult is the cousework for Occupational Therapy? I am going to be a freshman in college next year, and I'm very interested in occupational therapy. I have job shadowed multiple therapists, and my aunt (who is one) has answered many of my questions. One thing I'm not sure of is how hard the college classes will be leading up to OT school. I'm not a genius in physics or anatomy, so will it be very difficult? If anyone has taken classes required for OT, please give me your input! Thanks.
How can a person receive Occupational Therapy? I was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was a child, and for the most part, you could never tell today. However, my fine motor skills are seriously impaired (like I am 22 and still sometimes have problems buttoning my pants and cutting meat). How do I get occupational therapy...I think it would benefit me. I am in my last year of college and need to gain some fine motor skills to live on my own and to perform my job adequetly (I will be a Special Education teacher in May). Like I said, all my other areas are fine. Do I need a refferral from my doctor, or will neuropsychologist do? Thanks.
How hard is it to get into an Occupational Therapy (MOT) program? I am a recent college graduate with a bachelors of business administration and a minor in psychology. I would like a career in the health field and Occupational Therapy sounds like a really interesting career. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into an MOT program, how to make your application more competitive, and what are the best schools to apply to? How many volunteer hours are necessary to be competitive and what GPA and GRE scores? Thanks for your help!
What are the requirements to enter a master's program in occupational therapy? On average, how selective are the programs? I have a year left of school and want to do occupational therapy now. I am a junior in college and have a 3.94 GPA, but my major is in history. Does my major matter a lot if I take all the prerequisites? And does one need A LOT of experience with patients, or will a little suffice? What kind of experience is good to have? Thanks so much for the info.
What colleges offer the 5 year degree program for Occupational Therapy? I am really confused. I am going to be at a community college this summer to get my Associates of Arts and Sciences degree. Where can I find a list of schools that offer Occupational Therapy as a major. It is a Masters degree correct? Will I be okay to transfer in from a two year college with a AA to a program?
how would a student requiring occupational therapy services in school get access to an OT? Could someone please describe the procedure that a student or teacher would have to follow so that a student can get access to occupational therapy services in school? I know that once you have a referral, it is sent to the CCAC (Community Care and Access Centre) and they send in an OT to the school, but who would make this referral? Can parents do it? Is it the teacher that does it? I need to know for a paper that I'm writing. Thanks a lot! EDIT: neither, I'm Canadian (: I understand that a child's school may request a formal meeting known as "Identification, Placement and Review Committees" (IPRC) to discuss whether or not a child needs any extra supports. My question is, who assess the child prior to and after an IPRC? When exactly do OTs enter the picture? Are the referrals for OTs sent in by schools so that the child's needs can be assessed before an IPRC? Or do OTs come in because it is decided at the IPRC that the child needs their services? I really appreciate all the help. Thanks!
What are some funny Occupational Therapy quotes? What are funny Occupational Therapy quotes? I would like some funny quotes/statements on what people think Occupational Therapy is or what Occupational Therapist do. Ex. OT's work with helping people feel better after losing their jobs.
Has anyone ever studied Occupational Therapy and has some advice about the job? I want to go to university next year and I am weighing up my options. Is it possible to get a joint masters degree in occupational and physical therapy? Is there a such thing as getting one masters degree in two years for two different but related majors? Kind of like a double major except it is for a master's degree. I want to pursue careers in physical and occupational therapy, but I don't want to stay in school for 4 whole years when the two majors are so closely related. If this is possible, what schools offer this and where are they? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.
Does anyone know what occupational therapy is? I am currently an occupational therapy student, and I have noticed that hardly anyone I know has any idea what my career is. I was curious to see if this is the consensus, or if there are people out there who know what OT is. I thought it would help me as a student to know about the overall awareness of occupational therapy. Thanks!
How to become a certified Occupational Therapy assistant? I recently received an AA degree from my Community College and I was looking into becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant. Everything that I have read about it says you need to have an AA degree. I did take some medical classes in college (i.e. Anatomy and Physiology). I am just wondering what I should do to receive that certification. Take some more classes or just take a test? Please help.
Is Penn Foster a good school to get my Diploma to be an Occupational Therapy aide? I am thinking about starting class with penn foster within the next few weeks and wanted to get some ideas about the school before i do. I have read a lot of message boards, and Q&A boards and a lot are saying this is not an accredited school and that its a waste of time and money. I would love to get some input from previous or current students. If it is a good accredited school will i learn the necessary skills i will need to be a occupational therapy aide?

how to write an Occupational Therapy UCAS personal statement? I'm applying to universities to do the BSc Occupational Therapy and I don't know what to include in my personal statement! Does anyone know where I can find some examples, or at least give me some tips? I'd love to hear from someone who has been in the same situation and been successful. 'touche, darling' (feels quite wrong saying that lol) i'm just about to start my third year of my Psychology degree at UCLan (Preston), but I've had a change of heart and want to do OT instead. I'll look on clearing to see if there are any places but if not, I'll apply next year. Another 3 year degree *sobs*....it's been so long since I wrote my last personal statement that I haven't got a clue.

Occupational Therapy Assistant as a spring board? I'm currently attending a community college to attempt to better my marks in order to transfer to a 4-year university. They have a good occupational therapy assistant program at the school I'm currently attending. Would it be more beneficial for me to get that degree and use it as a spring-board or would I be better served to stick with general physiology, science, and human services classes and wait until I transfer to the university to pursue my real dream of becoming an occupational therapist?
When should a occupational therapy be put in a IEP. My son has had a IEP for 2 yrs.? Occupational therapy added this year and shouldn't he been receiving these services before. The occupational therapist says he has low muscle tone and "flat" quality. Immature grasp. Why did they not catch this earlier. What testing areas do they use in the initial testing. Shouldn't the special education teacher caught this earlier. Could her knowledge have helped my son earlier. I live in Nebraska.
Can I major in education and fulfill requirements for entry into occupational therapy school or dental school? I really would like to get into physical therapy, occupational therapy, or dental school whenever I complete my bachelor's degree, however I do not want to major in biology or the hard sciences because I would not be able to get many jobs with a bachelor's degree in those majors. I have been told that I can complete any major and get the requirements. I want to know if this route will take longer or be a little harder because I would have to satisfy grad school requirements and my bachelor's degree requirements. Anyone out there that have actually did this, anyone know anything about this route. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Can anyone give me any advice about Occupational Therapy? I already have a BA degree but I'm pursuing Occupational Therapy for a MS degree. I have a pediatric course, internship and about 6 master's courses remaining to finish. Are there any excellent internships in your area and please give me detailed information about them? Do you advise Occupational Therapy pediatrics or geriatrics and why?
What should I do for career? occupational or massage therapy? I have a degree in occupational therapy but haven't done that in 6 years. I currently am learning massage therapy and seem to like that. I never did like Occupational Therapy because I could not see how it would benefit people, and feel that it really is rather worthless. I do see that massage therapy greatly helps people physically and relieves stress. The problem is that Occupational Therapy may have more job stability because insurance and medicare pay the bills, and would be easier physically. (more stressful mentally, because of the paperwork.) So, the question is, should I go back and try to do Occupational Therapy for the money and benefits, and less physical stress (working for a company), but feel mental anguish, or should I try and do massage therapy, and possibly tire out physically, but then have the ability to work on my own. Also I am that young anymore, but do not have any retirement pension, and little money saved up. What to do? Please help.
Does anyone know anything about occupational Therapy ? I'm in school right now a freshmen in a jc and right now im taking prerequisites to major in sociology, but ultimately i want to be an occupational therapist, but my counselor told me i could major in whatever and apply to grad school for occupational therapy i think she is wrong because that doesn't sound right to me. What should I major in if I want to get into occupational therapy school, other than Biology or occupational t I want to get into occupational therapy school after I get my undergraduate degree. I do not want to major in Biology and there are no schools that offer occupational therapy as a bachelor's degree within a 300 mile radius. I want to know if there are any alternatives that would let me get my prerequisites/preparation? Also, is there a major I could major in and get my prerequisites and have a wide variety of job opportunities without a master's degree?
Just a few questions about occupational therapy? is there an occupational therapy just dealing with kids? like for example 1-17 yrs. or something like that. how much can they make a year or month? can they specialize in just a couple of areas like congenital myopathy, cerebral palsy, etc.. or do they do it all like blindness, Alzheimer's etc. and finally do they work at the person's house or at the hospital?
What would an Occupational Therapy Assistant need to do to become an Occupational Therapist? I went to a two year school and graduated with an associates degree. I am now an OTA. The school I went to is accredited but I'm wondering if the classes I took would have any relevance to the classes I would need to take to become an Occupational Therapist. Could I enroll in a four year university and put the two years of schooling I have towards my school or would I have to start over from the beginning to become an Occupational Therapist?
Is it true that occupational therapy assistant responsibilities will increase? I read that since medicare was going to be making HUGE reimbursment cuts, some Occupational Therapist would advance on to supervisory positions, and letting the COTAs be more involved in patient treatment planning. What do you guys think? I already know that COTAs have more planning/evaluation responsibility than LPTAs. or is this a myth? Thanks
How is occupational therapy related to Biology? Also, what it the salary range for an occupational therapist and what are some simple benefits and drawbacks? - I have a huge project due along with other class work and I am desperate for help!! Thanks!!!
What can I do with a kinesiology/exercise science degree besides physical or occupational therapy??? i'm a kinesiology major with a concentration in exercise science. i am actaully interested in going into occupational therapy when i graduate, but i was just wondering what i can do in the mean time if it just so happens that i wait around before going to grad school. whether it's because i want time off from school or because i didn't get acceptance into a school the first try around. i want something i can do that deals with my major and DOES NOT require more schooling while i wait to go to OT/PT school? making decent money??? i know some ppl think it's a lost cause to work with just a B.S. in Knes, so i would like only serious answers please. and no, i'm not changing my major! appreciate the help!

Creative ways to advocate for Occupational Therapy? I am an OT student and was thinking about creative ways to advocate for Occupational Therapy and was wondering if anyone had any interesting and fun ways to advocate for the career? Examples so far...providing information to college students at a table in a busy lobby regarding ergonomics and proper posture at a computer...or providing info on wellness & maintaining healthy & stress free lifestyle while in college...etc....Thank you!!! : )
Occupational Therapy? I am interested in switching majors to pre-OT. Most of what I read online has said that I should get my undergrad in Biology, but I am not that good at it. Would it be possible to do my undergrad in Psych with a geriatrics certificate or something? I know that a psychology major has many electives that I could use to take the required math and sciences that I would need to apply to an occupational therapy school. Any OTs out there? Have any ideas?
Does the combination of acupuncture and occupational therapy help relieve damaged nerves in an arm? My mom was in a car accident and got damaged nerves in her left arm. She cannot lift the arm up at all. Right now she is getting treatment, which is acupuncture and occupational therapy. I want to know if it is good to have these treatments done. I also compared her two arms to see if the humor bone in her left arm has been dislocated. To me it felt like there was a difference. If anyone has went through the same situation please tell some helpul hints on how to cure this problem.
Can anyone give me some insight on obtaining my masters in Occupational Therapy with an online program? I am currently in college almost finished with my teaching degree. However, I have realized that being a teacher would be great....I feel that I can serve children in another way other than in the "classroom" and make more money. So I am interested in also pursueing a career in Occupational Therapy. My college does not offer the MBA program and being a mother of two would be difficult to attend any of the 6 Texas colleges that happen to offer it. Would any of the online programs be beneficial?
